Original by Oren Lavie, Yuval and Merav Nathan
Rip-off by Jacqui Paterson & Jessica Harold (creatives)
and Dael Oates (director)
I'd been meaning to post this one for a while but couldn't
track down the guilty parties. But then I received a
message from Ben at stuffbenfound.blogspot.com who
delivered not only the team and the director, but
everyone from the account managers to the animators,
all served up like a vertiable cheese board of cunts.
Cheers Ben.

Oh dear. Perhaps we should all take a deep breath and have a look at just exactly where "Her Morning Elegance" (speaking of copy cunts) was originally "inspired" from:

I don't think anyone would doubt that this Target ad wasn't in some way inspired by many beautiful clips using similar techniques, and I don't think they've denied it. But for most things, you'll always find a long list of influences.
I think this mob have done great job developing it an making it their own. Much like, dare I say, 'Her Morning Elegance' who "borrowed" the ORIGINAL idea / clip by Mitchell Roses to develop their video clip which also uses the same technique. Good to trace all the refeneces back to the original source. BTW - they are all just an animation technique not a big idea.
this video for a song by a south african band called Goldfish looks suspiciously familiar:

Just a thought. I work in the industry myself and I'm not entirely comfortable with you broadcasting the whole team by name. It's entirely feasible, if not probable, that most of the team had never seen the original you pointed out.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, I think you are doing a great thing by posting these frauds. The agency, fine. The "creatives", fine. The director, fine. But the rest? I work as a DOP and half of the time I've no idea if the original idea happened to be made somewhere in the states or Asia before I get hired to a job.
Just thinking...
This Amazon/Kindle commercial also rips off "Her Morning Elegance". But as Ecclesiastes said, "There's nothing new under the sun".

Absolutely fucking hilarious!
ReplyDeleteYes, the clips are similar in that they both draw on a dream sequence and on stop animation. However, this is not surprising. The reason these clips are similar, and the reason you can have a blog all about parallels between advertising is because, well, media draws social trends...because that is what is popular at the time. You Could youtube a thousand stop animation clips from 2009. As a matter of fact, if you search "stop animation 2009" on youtube, you get around 6,730. I find it ridiculous that you think that "copying" in the media is new, or you are some sort of whistle blower to a new fad. This happens constantly and will continue to, and goes further than just Ads. The Media responds to current social trends, meaning you could draw some level of similarity between almost anything created within the same time period.
ReplyDeleteSo….Hi-5 for stating the obvious?
